Rusty Lake: Roots is the second commercial game set in the Rusty Lake universe, following on from Rusty Lake Hotel. You must explore the dark and twisted family tree of James Vanderboom, who inherits a house next to Rusty Lake. There are 16 Steam Achievements, all documented in the walkthrough below. The series continues with Rusty Lake Paradise.

Family Tree

The parts of the family tree can be completed in any order once they are available. They are listed below in date order (apart from at the graveyard near the end).

Spring 1860: The Tree

Read the note in James' pocket to see the number 572 on the bottom. Now open the suitcase with this code. Take a bone from inside, and find a seed in the small box in the case. Look right and give the bone to the dog, then click on it and it will dig a hole. Plant the seed in the hole Plant a Tree. Pick up the watering can and use it on the well on the left; lower the watering can, raise it again and take it now that it is full of water. Use the watering can on the seed, then click on it to make it grow. Click on James, then on his face to add him to the family tree.

Spring 1860: The House

Drag the stool over to James then click on it and he will stand on it. Take a twig from the sapling and give it to James, then get him to knock the nest to the ground. Look at the pots and take the worm from the ground and a diamond from the left pot. Now examine the nest - click on the egg until a bird hatches. Give the worm to the bird then click on it to make it fly away. Take a second diamond. Look to the right and examine the window. Click on it until it breaks, then take a third diamond. Place the diamonds in the slots on the front door, then open the door and go inside.

Summer 1860: The Uncle

Examine the portrait of The Vanderboom Brothers and peel it back, then take the key hidden behind it. Search the drawers on the far right to find some matches. Use the key to unlock the bottom drawer and take a hatchet from inside. Look at the tree stump to the left and chop it with your hatchet, then pick up the wood. Put this in the fireplace and light it with your matches, then pick up another key hanging in the fireplace. Use this to unlock the padlock blocking the window, then open the shutters and note the pattern of hand-prints on the panes of glass. Examine the cabinet on the left and press the corresponding buttons (1st row right, 3rd row middle, 5th row left, 6th row right). Open the cabinet, then open the pocket watch and click on it to see the time: 8:25. Set the same time on the grandfather clock, then break it open. Knock the body to the floor. Click on the nipple until it falls off The Nipple. Go into the body and get the heart. Keep going forward to exit through the mouth. Place the heart into the jar on top of the cabinet, then click on it.

Summer 1865: Finding Love

Take a rose from the right, then examine the tree and take a feather from the crow. Take the hanky from James' pocket. Give the rose to Mary and make her smell it until her nose bleeds. Use the hanky on her nose. Look at the blank note in James' hand, then use the bloody hanky on it. Use the feather on the blood to write a note, then give it to Mary and click on her to get her to move closer to James. Take the worm that is revealed. Give this to the crow, then click on the crow to make it leave. Pick up the key and use this to unlock the cabinet. Take the ring from the hand in the cabinet and give it to Mary, then click on her face to add her to the family tree.

Spring 1867: Childbirth

Look at the chest of drawers on the right and take the spoon and mortar, then look at the 3 birth certificates. Search the drawers to find some scissors. Use the scissors to cut the plant on the right. Use the plant on the pestle, then grind it with the mortar and collect some of the green birth potion with your spoon. Give this to Mary, then lift up her skirt. Bring out the first baby, cut the cord with your scissors and pick it up. Repeat this with the second baby and then the third baby Triplets.

Click on Mary again, then pick up the placenta. Give this to the dog, then click on him to make him fall asleep. Take the key from around the dog's neck. Use the key to unlock the small high cabinet, then take the 3 bottles from inside. Look at the cribs and take a tap from the second one. Examine the barrel on the right and attach the tap. Place a bottle beneath the tap, then turn the tap and retrieve your bottle of wine. Give another bottle to Mary to get it filled with milk, then take it back. Open the window and place the 3rd bottle on the ledge, then take it back once it is filled with water. Now give the 3 bottles to the 3 babies (left milk, middle water, right wine). Click on the middle bottle.

Summer 1870: The Staircase

Examine the top shelf of the bookcase and rearrange the books so the lines all match up correctly - a slider on the right will automatically go down. Look at the note on the small table, and the book being read by James. Also peel back the picture in the frame on the right, and use the information from all 3 sites to work out the code on the safe (top row: triangle, circle, triangle; middle row: circle, moon, moon; bottom row: triangle, moon, triangle). Take the binoculars from the cabinet.

Open the window and use the binoculars to look at the hotel. Zoom in on the windows and note the order of the animals. Back out and examine the middle shelf of the bookcase. Rearrange the statues in this order: rabbit, pigeon, boar, crow, deer, pheasant - a slider on the right will go down. Now examine the bottom shelf of the bookcase and rearrange the books to show these symbols: square, circle, triangle, S, cross. The final slider on the right will now go down. Head through the secret passage and down the stairs.

Summer 1870: The Elixir

Look at the picture on the wall to see the weights of the dot and plus symbols. Now play with the bottles on the desk and the set of scales to work out the missing weight values. Add drops from the bottles into the large bottle on the right, in this order: ~xxo. Pick up the bottle of elixir The Elixir. Examine the dog and put some in his bowl, then click on him to make him drink it. Next examine James and click on him to see he is holding a glass. Put elixir in the glass, have him drink it, then click on him until he is dead. Click on the glass on the floor.

Summer 1870: The Wake

Open the casket and move the rings on both hands so they match the tattoos. Now click on the gap in the jacket and take the eye. Examine the cabinet on the floor and take a coin from behind the jar. Press the buttons on the bottom of the cabinet to display pictures of a deer and a crow, then open the cabinet and get a second coin. Look in the casket again and place coins on each eye, then open the mouth and take another eye. Examine the broken statue on the right and place the pieces back together. Insert the two eyes into the statue, then open the bottom of the statue and take the knife from inside. Open the casket again and cut out the tongue with your knife. Place the tongue in the jar, then click on it.

Spring 1876: Child's Play

Look at the pots and take the pot lid from the right and the marbles from inside the left pot. Look over at the tree. Take the twig and honey from the tree, and steal the elastic ribbon from Emma's bow. Go over to Samuel on the left, then give him the twig, elastic ribbon and marbles. Click on Samuel then have him shoot the butterfly out of the tree. Go and focus on Emma - put the honey in her jar, then click on the butterfly and it will enter the jar. Give the pot cover to Emma and have her close the jar. Click on Albert until Emma knocks him down. Switch back to Samuel and have him shoot the beehive until it falls down. Click on Albert, then back out and talk to Mr Crow.

Spring 1884: Fertility

Take the garden weasel from the base of the tree. Look at the yellow flower pot and notice the 4 colored flowers labeled 1 to 4. Now you must create each of these by using the bee to pollinate the white flower:

  1. Red, yellow, red, green leaves
  2. Red, blue, red, green spikes
  3. Red, blue, blue, green leaves, curls
  4. Blue, yellow, blue, green flat leaves

If you make a mistake you can discard the flower using the garden weasel. Go over to Emma and place all 4 flowers in her pot, then click on them to combine into one flower. Click on this, then on Emma and the glowing seeds will enter her body. Now click on Emma's face to add her to the family tree.

Spring 1885: Masks

Pick up the blue mask and the watering can, then put the blue mask on Albert. Open the shutters and the window, then put the watering can on the ledge. Pick it up again and it will be full of water. Pour water into the funnel on the wall and take the key that comes out the bottom. Now examine the wall cabinet on the left and use your key to unlock the top door. Open this and take the white mask, then put the white mask on Albert. Look at the window again and take the longest icicle. Use this on the right pipe on the wall and take the key that comes out the bottom.

Use your new key on the lower door of the wall cabinet, then take the binoculars from inside. Look out the window with the binoculars and turn to face the chapel, then zoom in on the character on the roof. Click on him, then note the symbols. Back out and use the blue mask on Albert, then look out the window with the binoculars again. Turn to face the large rock on the right, then zoom in on the character, click on him and note the symbols. Back out again and now examine the small cupboard on the right. Adjust to these symbols:

  • Top left: triangle pointing right
  • Top right: matchstick with round end up
  • Bottom left: U-shaped symbol facing up
  • Bottom right: triangle pointing left

Open the left compartment and take the moon mask The Moon Mask. Look out the window with the binoculars and zoom in on the black segment on the moon. Watch the hands of the figure you see there, then back out. Examine the small box on the left and enter code 5231, then open it and take the butterfly from inside. Put the butterfly on the table in front of Albert, then click on Albert to make him stab it. Click on Albert's face to add him to the family tree.

Spring 1889: The Clock

Pick up the saw, glue and gear. Examine the poster on the wall and take another gear from behind it. Open the window and pick up a 3rd gear. Now examine Samuel - take some matches from his apron pocket. Put the saw in his hands, then click on the saw. Pick up the 4th gear from the table. For this minigame, you need to cut the piece of wood into 2 pieces, slide the pieces of wood into position to make the shape indicated, then use the glue to fix the pieces together. Repeat this until you run out of shapes to make.

Look at the clock to the right. Place all the pieces of wood in position in the bottom, then put the bottom cover in place. Examine the top section and insert your 4 gears on to the pegs so they all fit together and start turning (the peg on the right is not used). Put the two final top pieces of the clock in position. Examine the poster on the wall again to see the time indicated, then set the time on the clock to 3:30. Look out the window and take the pipe from Ida. Give the pipe to Samuel, then light it. Click on Samuel's face to add him to the family tree.

Summer 1889: The Fortune Teller

Look at the table to see 3 voodoo dolls, then look at another hanging from the tree, and another within the hole in the tree. Enter the tent and examine the table here. You need to order the tarot cards using the voodoo doll symbols:

  • Top row: The Star, Death, The Devil
  • Bottom row: The Hermit, The Hanged Man, The Empress

Take the key when it is offered, then go back outside. Unlock the padlock on the cabinet with your key, then take a glass sphere from inside. Go back into the tent and give the glass sphere to Ida, then look into it and pay attention to all of the symbols. Now you must reorder the tarot cards with this new information:

  • Top row: The Empress, The Devil, Death
  • Bottom row: The Hanged Man, The Hermit, The Star

Look into the glass sphere to see some premonitions. Click on Ida's face to add her to the family tree.

Fall 1891: The Swing

Take the knife from Albert's pocket, then use this to carve the pumpkin. Pick up the pumpkin mask. Give this to Albert, then click on him and take his key. Use this key to unlock the padlock on the cupboard, then take the teddy head from inside. Also pick up the teddy arm from the ground. Put both the head and arm on the teddy bear in front of the well, then pick it up. Give the teddy bear to Frank over on the right. Pull the swing back as far as you can, then let go and he will fly over to the well. Pick up the teddy bear and give it to Frank again. Click on Albert until he makes Frank fall down, then click on Frank and then on the well.

Fall 1891: The Search

Look at the shrine on the left and take the ink and piece of paper. Examine the shelf above to find another piece of paper, and find one more behind the portrait at the top right. Now look at the table on the left and piece together the papers - this will give you 4 letters and 4 landmarks. Look through the telescope and find numbers corresponding to each of these landmarks. Look up at the high shelf again and solve the puzzle: 62 + 35 + 33 - 4 = 126. Open the compartment and take a stamp from inside. Look over at the desk on the right. Pour your ink into the inkwell, then use your stamp on the ink and then on the letter. Click on the letter to roll it up, then put it in the tube. Put the cap on the tube, then pick it up. Use the telescope and look at the hotel at 62. Open the window and attach the tube to the bird's neck, then click on the bird.

Winter 1895: The Wedding Photo

Take the green hat, brown cap and white veil from the rack on the left. Look at the small cabinet on the right and press the buttons to display a cube. Open the cabinet and take a black hat. Examine the top left cabinet and press the buttons according to the number of sides of the shapes: white x4, black x3, white x5, black x3, white x4. Open the cabinet and take a top hat. Examine the bottom left cabinet and press the buttons according to the number of vertices of the shapes: white x2, black, white x2, black x3, white x2, black, white x2. Open the cabinet and take a mask. Now place the various head-wear on each person in the photograph:

  • Albert: Mask
  • Emma: Black hat
  • Ida: White veil
  • Leonard: Brown cap
  • Mary: Green hat
  • Samuel: Top hat

Examine the camera and press the brown button to take a photograph. Click on Ida's face in the picture.

Summer 1896: The Painting

Look at the pot by itself on the left and take the shell and the turmeric. Look at the 3 smaller pots and pick up a key from the ground. Look over to the cabinet on the right. Use the key to open the padlock and take a bottle from inside, then also pick up the paintbrush. Next look at the tree and pick up the berries. Click on the hole in the tree, then collect some oil in your bottle. Back out and look at the table. Pick up the mortar and put the turmeric in the pestle, then grind it with the mortar, add some oil and pick up the yellow paint. Next grind the white shell, add some oil and pick up the white paint. Finally grind the berries, add some oil and pick up the red paint.

Look over at the canvas on the left. Add your 3 paint colors to the palette, then use your paintbrush on the paints. Paint the people black, the tree orange, the ground yellow, the house white and the moon red. Now scroll over to the right. Look at Emma's face and click on her tears.

Winter 1896: The Lying Game

Look at the table between the family members to see the rules of the game. If you look at each person they are holding 3 cards, some showing the truth and some showing lies. Click on the bottom right corner of the gold-framed portrait to find a key. Use this to unlock the window, then open it and take a tarot card. Click on the top left corner of the wedding photo to find another tarot card. Using information from the cards, enter the code 3794 into the cabinet and take another tarot card from inside. Place all of the tarot cards on the table, then assign them to the correct people:

  • Albert: The Devil
  • Ida: The Empress
  • Mary: The Chariot
  • Samuel: The High Priestess

Open the window and take the deer skull, then give this to Albert. Click on his face.

Summer 1904: The Family Band

Take pieces of paper from Leonard's and Albert's pockets. Take a piece of paper from behind the small table on the right. Now put all the pieces of paper together in the frame on the wall. Take note of the music indicated. Get Samuel to play EGEG, Albert AEAE, Leonard CBCB and Ida TLTL. After the scene changes, look in Mary's mouth and take her teeth. Put these in the bottle on the table.

Summer 1904: Voodoo

Look at Samuel and take his pipe. Back out and use the pipe to light the candle on the small table, then pick it up. Look at Albert and use the candle to light fires on the arms and head of the voodoo doll on the left, then raise its right arm - this will cause Samuel to knock down a lamp. Look at this and take the key from inside. Use this key to unlock a small box on the right table and take a pin from inside. Look at the other box on this table to see it requires a combination. Stick your pin into the voodoo doll in Albert's other hand and move the arms into various positions, stopping to look at Ida's face. You will then be able to work out the combination to open the other box:

  • Both arms level: Eyes open, mouth shut
  • Left arm up, right arm down: Eyes shut, mouth open
  • Left arm down, right arm level: Eyes shut, mouth shut

Now open this box and take the scissors from inside. Use these to cut the buttons off both voodoo dolls. Go to the back room and pick up Samuel's eye, then pick up Ida's eye The Eye. Put the eyes into the jars on the left table, then click on them.

Summer 1909: The Brood

Look at the pipes and pick up the glass pot from the right. Give this to Albert, then click on him and take the pot with semen. Look at the table on the right. Pick up the potato, then open the box and take the egg from inside. Click on the grate until you see Frank, then give him the potato and pick up the flints he offers in return. Look at the framed instructions on the wall, then examine the pipes on the right. Turn the pipes to connect the yellow funnel to the large flask at the bottom. Drop the egg and the semen into the funnel. Turn the pipes so that both the green potion and the tap will eventually pass into the large flask. Use your flint on the candle to send the potion in, then turn the tap. Click on the newly-formed baby.

Spring 1914: The War Hero

Read the papers on the ground, particularly the one about the pigeons. Look at the pigeons now and place them in these positions:

  • Red: Top left
  • Blue: Bottom right
  • White: Top right
  • Green: Bottom left

Ring the bell twice, then pick up the bike part from the ground. Look at the pigeons and move them again:

  • Red: Top right
  • Blue: Top left
  • White: Bottom middle
  • Green: Bottom right

Ring the bell twice, then pick up 2 bike parts from the ground. Look at the pigeons and move them again:

  • Red: Top middle
  • Blue: Top left
  • White: Bottom left
  • Green: Bottom middle

Ring the bell twice, then pick up the bike part from the ground. Place the parts of the bike on the ground in front of the bike, then put the bike together. Click on Leonard's face to add him to the family tree.

Winter 1918: The Trenches

Examine the left table and take the wooden cup and the wooden table leg. Examine Leonard and search his pockets to find a key. Add the wooden cup and leg to his stump. Search the drawers on the right to get some scissors and use the key on the bottom drawer so you can get some pincers. Go back to Leonard and use the scissors to remove the bandages from his head. Use them to cut open the fabric over the bullet wound on his left arm, and the multiple wounds to his left leg. Drag the band-aids on his leg around to completely cover the blood. Use the pincers to remove the bullet from his arm.

Now zoom in on his eyes to reach a flashback. Pull the pin on the grenade, then drag the two halves of the body together and click on it. Click on Leonard to make him close his eyes, then open them again and zoom back in to the flashback. Pull the pin on the grenade, then drag the pieces of two bodies back together and click on them. Click on Leonard to make him close his eyes, then open them again and zoom back in to the flashback. Pull the pin on the grenade, then drag the pieces of Albert's body back together, including the antlers, then click on him. Click on Leonard to make him close his eyes, then open them again and zoom back in to the flashback. Pull the pin on the grenade, then drag the pieces of Mr Crow's body back together. Talk to him, then take his key.

Click on Leonard to go back into the flashback. Use your key to unlock the box and take the gas mask from inside. Pull the pin on the grenade, then drag the pieces of 3 odd bodies back together. Memorise the shapes, then click on them. Back out and look at the combination lock on the right. Open this with the symbols you saw in the last flashback, then take the foot. Place the foot into the jar on the far left, then click on it.

Fall 1919: Communication

Talk to Rose, then use the Ouija board to indicate "Yes". Talk to Rose again, then examine the portrait of William Vanderboom and click on it until it becomes corrupted. Use the Ouija board to type "William". Talk to Rose again, then use the Ouija board to type "Vanderboom". Talk to Rose, then use the Ouija board to indicate "Yes". Take the golden key from her and use it on the cabinet to the right. Open this fully, then take another key. Click on the mirror inside until you see the word "Live" written in blood. Use your new key to open the box on the left, and read both pieces of paper inside. Talk to Rose 3 more times, answering using the Ouija board by saying "Live", "Sacrifices" and "Timepieces". Talk to Rose one last time, then click on her face to add her to the family tree.

Fall 1924: The Well Part 1

Look at the teddy bear on the left. Pull its head off and take the wire, then also pick up the nearby sharp rock. Click on the paper airplane repeatedly until you get it up out of the well, then a bucket will be lowered. Examine the grate and click on it to make a hand appear, then stab it with your sharp rock. Pick up the berries that are dropped. Give these to Frank, then take the straight twig. Now examine the bucket to see a forked twig - place your wire and straight twig here as well.

Put the forked twig on the left and the straight twig on the right, then back out and wait as the bucket is raised and lowered again. Look inside and take the cup with liquid. Give this to Frank and make him drink it. Look back to the bucket again. This time put the wire on the left and the forked twig on the right. Back out and wait as the bucket is raised and lowered again. Look inside and take the fish. Give this to Frank and make him eat it, then take the fish bone. Look back to the bucket again. Now put the fish bone on the left, then the forked twig on the right. Put the straight twig on top of the forked twig. Back out and wait as the bucket is raised and lowered again. Look inside and take the wooden stick. Give this to Frank, then back out and click on him to get him to climb into the bucket. Click on his face to add him to the family tree.

Fall 1924: The Well Part 2

Click on the well, then read the message on the paper airplane. Use the handle of the well twice, to send the bucket down, then bring it back up again. Look in the bucket to see the request for water. Look at the flower pots on the right and collect the worm, cup and matches. Now go to the dog - click on him and he will urinate. Put the cup down to where the urine was flowing, then click on the dog again. Now pick up the cup The Cup. Put the cup into the bucket.

Use the handle twice, then look in the bucket to see the request for food. Place your worm in the bear trap. Take the hatchet from the fire pit, and take the wooden stick from Rose. Now pick up the fish from the bear trap. Use the hatchet on the lowest tree branch, then again on the fallen branch. Pick up the wood and put it in the fire pit. Put the wooden stick over the forks, put the fish on the stick, and light the wood with your matches. Back out, then look at the fire pit again and take the grilled fish. Put the fish into the bucket.

Use the handle twice, then look in the bucket to see the request for a wooden stick. Place the wooden stick into the bucket. Use the handle twice again, then click on Frank.

Fall 1926: Checkmate

Look at the cerebrum picture and take the knife from above the frame. Look at Frank and use the knife on the potato until you end up with a chess king. Examine the orange cabinet and unlock it by pressing these buttons: down, up, down, down, up, up, down, down, up, down, up. Open the cabinet and take the chess horse from inside. Place both of your chess pieces on the table, then click on spaces to move the horse until it takes the king. Back out, then focus on the chessboard again. Now move the horse around to take the king by spelling out the word "Cerebrum" - the king is on the M square. Look at the men, then click on Albert until he is dead. Use the knife to remove his crown. Pick up his brain, then put it in the jar and click on it.

Winter 1927: The Bathroom

Close the left window. Drag the boards on the right window to cover all of the holes. Look at the mirror to the left and click on it until it breaks, then take the key. Search the drawers to get matches, then use the key on the middle drawer and take the coal from inside. Open the door of the furnace and put the coal inside, then light it with your matches and close the door. Take the bucket from the top of the furnace. Place the bucket on the sink, turn the tap on and off again, then pick up a bucket of water. Put this on top of the furnace again. Flip the levers on the furnace up, then take the bucket of hot water. Pour this into the bath, then click on Frank and take his key. Use this on the bottom drawer to get some scissors. Use the scissors to cut Frank's hair until you have some in your inventory. Place the hair into the jar on the table, then click on it.

Fall 1929: The Treasure

Click on the hole in the tree, then keep clicking the insect until you get it. Now look at the table and make the grasshoppers switch positions (green, brown 2 times, green 3 times, brown 3 times, green 3 times, brown 2 times, green). Click on them to make them leave, then pick up the one that remains. Pick up the shovel, then read the note in Leonard's hand. Now look at the frog, and place both the grasshopper and insect on the ground next to it. Follow the instructions on the note:

  • Move the frog to the rock and make it jump 3 times, then place the coin beneath it
  • Move the insect to the coin and make it jump 3 times, then place the coin beneath it
  • Move the grasshopper to the coin and make it jump 3 times, then place the coin beneath it
  • Move the insect to the coin and make it jump 2 times, then place the coin beneath it
  • Move the frog to the coin and make it jump 2 times, then place the coin beneath it
  • Move the insect to the coin and make it jump 1 time, then place the coin beneath it
  • Move the grasshopper to the coin and make it jump 3 times, then place the coin beneath it

Now use the shovel on the coin. Look at the hole and take out the timepiece. Give this to Leonard, then click on it.

Winter 1930: The Stars

Look at the table and take the tarot card and bird food. Look at the first portrait and take another tarot card, making sure to notice the constellation drawn over the portrait. Next look at the painting and take another tarot card, then note another constellation. Click on the painting to make it fall, then rotate the discs on the puzzle behind it to create one continuous path. Climb the ladder up to an attic. Look at the telescope, and place your 3 tarot cards with the other one on the left. Draw lines between the stars to form the 4 constellations from the tarot cards (from left to right, draw the tree, cube, deer and crow). Next draw the constellation from the portrait, and click on Emma to talk to her. Finally draw the one from the painting, and click on Mr Crow to talk to him. Click on the lens to take it, then go back down the ladder.

Open the right window and put bird food in the feeder. Back away, then go to the window when Harvey has arrived. Open the tube around his neck and take the letter. Give the letter to Frank. Go back to Harvey and click on him until he leaves. Back out, then go back to the window to see a message The Date. Go back to Frank and look at the letter, then put the lens over it and drag it around so the letter V matches up with the V in the writing. Go over to the locked chest on the left and input the code "Love". Open the chest and take the timepiece. Give this to Frank, then click on it.

Spring 1933: The Last Dance

Look at the cabinet on the right and solve a series of 6 sliding block puzzles (reset the puzzle by pressing the red button on the side). Take the record from inside the cabinet when you are done. Notice the arrows along the top of the cabinet. Now use the record on the gramophone and pull the handle on the side. Click on Frank to get them into dancing position, then dance according to the arrows on top of the cabinet: right 2 times, left 2 times, right 3 times, left 3 times, right 2 times. Click on Rose's face, then take her key.

Look at the higher cabinet on the wall and unlock it with the key. Take a record and a dress from inside, and again note the arrows on the cabinet. Give the dress to Rose The Dress. Pull the handle on the gramophone to stop the music. Put the new record on the gramophone and pull the handle again. Click on Frank to get them into dancing position, then dance according to the arrows on top of the high cabinet: right 3 times, left, right, left, right, left 2 times, right 3 times. Click on Rose's face. Take the needle from the gramophone and use it to prick Rose's finger, then click on the blood.

Fall 1932: The Graveyard

Take the shovel from the open grave on the right. Take the bone from the dog, then use the shovel on the grave's belonging to Emma, Ida, Samuel and James, and take a bone from each. Dig up Mary's grave to reveal a puzzle box and solve the riddle using the dates and symbols on each of the headstones/crosses - enter the code "2233" and take the piercer from inside. Use this piercer on the hole in Albert's grave, then push it in and take another bone. Go back to the open grave and use all the bones to make a complete skeleton. Open the skull and take a timepiece from inside. Give this to Rose, then click on it.

Spring 1935: Roots

Collect the 3 timepieces and go through the doorway. Place the 3 timepieces on the 3 artworks and open each of them - they are all set to 2:45. Back out and set the time on the grandfather clock to 2:45. Click on Rose to ensnare her in the roots, then close the clock. Go through the doorway again and the gate in front of the sacrifices will lift up. Back out and look at the pictures on the right to see letters corresponding with the various sacrifices. Go to the back room and approach the sacrifices. Move them around to work out the relative weights of them, and place them on these pedestals from left to right:

  • Teeth: 3
  • Eye: 1
  • Foot: 2
  • Tears: 4
  • Hair: 3
  • Tongue: 5
  • Blood: 2
  • Eye: 1
  • Brain: 3

Now go back out to the cabinet on the right and enter the appropriate numbers (top row: 535, bottom row: 234). Open the cabinet to see a message and receive a pot with a heart. Go to the sacrifices and place the heart on the empty pedestal on the right, and the tree roots will come down into them all. Click on each of the sacrifices. Approach the black figure, then drag all of the sacrifices onto him. Watch the next few sequences and the baby will end up in Rose's arms Rebirth.

Gold Emblems

Going to the "More Roots" option will let you explore the family tree to try to find a gold emblem for each family member. Click on the large portraits on the family tree to attempt to find these emblems.

James

Examine the suitcase and set the combination to 666. Tear open the inner lining of the suitcase to find the gold emblem. Also examine all of the tarot cards, which contain hints for some of the other emblems.

Frank

Using the word "Crow" from the Hermit tarot card, click on the letters C, R, O and W on the writing on the wall. Open the hidden panel in the wall to the left to find the gold emblem. Also examine one more tarot card here.

Mary

Examine the severed hand in the open cabinet and click on the fingers as shown on The Lovers tarot card: ring finger, little finger, middle finger, index finger, little finger. Take the gold emblem.

Emma

Look at the yellow flower pot and click on the flowers above the Roman numerals in the order indicated on the Queen of Pentacles tarot card: III, IV, II, IV, I. Take the gold emblem.

Samuel

Examine the grandfather clock. Set the time to 10:35, as shown on the Wheel of Fortune tarot card. Take the gold emblem.

Albert

Examine the cabinet on the right and set the symbols to those shown on The Devil tarot card:

  • Top left: triangle pointing left
  • Top right: matchstick with round end right
  • Bottom left: U-shaped symbol facing right
  • Bottom right: triangle pointing up

Examine another tarot card (and look at the back of it), then take the gold emblem.

Ida

Enter the tent and reorder the tarot cards again, using the symbols on the tarot cards you have seen:

  • Top row: The Star, The Empress, The Devil
  • Bottom row: The Hanged Man, The Hermit, The Empress

Take the gold emblem when it is offered.

Leonard

Look at the pigeons and move them according to the Death tarot card:

  • Red: Top middle
  • Blue: Top left
  • White: Top right
  • Green: Bottom left

Ring the bell twice, then look at the ground and pick up the gold emblem.

Rose

Use the Ouija board to send the message "CubeEscape". Back out and talk to Rose Laura. Now use the Ouija board to send the message "RustyLake". Pick up the final gold emblem The Last Emblem.

Alchemy Lab

There will now be an extra level within the roots of the family tree. Talk to Aldous here, then examine the family crest on the left for the hint that you need an egg and a glass bottle. There are lots of other things you can make in the alchemy lab, all by combining 2 existing ingredients in the bowl. Follow these instructions to create the important items:

Click on the elixir to pick it up. Pour it into the glass Aldous is holding, then drink from the glass. Pass through William's body and take the seed on the way through. Talk to Aldous until he transforms The Crow. Now give him the seed, talk to him, and click on the seed again.
