Casebook Episode 1: Kidnapped is the first in a series of 3 first-person detective games using FMV, and follows after the prequel, Casebook Episode 0: The Missing Urn. In this game, you investigate the kidnapping of a brother and sister. The series continues with Casebook Episode 2: The Watcher.

Overview

In each game location, your notebook will prompt you to answer a series of questions. You must search the location and take photographs of pieces of evidence, then return to the van to analyse them. In analysing the evidence, you will play a series of minigames. The lists in bold below are of the items that you need to photograph to solve each notebook objective. Optional items to photograph for extra points are not listed.

Bedroom

Match footprints

  • Muddy footprints, on the floor near the evidence #2 marker (phosphoric acid)

Try to link the muddy footprints to all 3 sets of shoes, but there are no matches.

Track the kidnappers

  • Ransom note, on the floor near the evidence #1 marker
  • Smashed bird cage, near the evidence #3 marker (fabric snag)
  • Windowsill, beneath the police tape
  • Window, to the right of the police tape (Clara's prints)
  • Stain, on the floor next to Harry's bed (Larson's whiskey)
  • Fibres, on the blue sheets of Harry's bed to the left

Put all your evidence in the folder. Link Sylvia's hate mail and the ransom note.

Find evidence from the family

  • Joystick, on the floor near the rocking horse (Harry's prints)
  • Table, left end of desk next to Greta's bed
  • Chair, armrest on the side of the brown chair near the foot of Greta's bed (Sylvia's prints)
  • Hair on chair, retrieved when taking the previous photograph (Clara's DNA)
  • Cat basket, on the floor near the foot of Greta's bed
  • Bedhead, at head of Greta's bed

You will now be told you need to collect DNA for the children.

Find exemplars

  • Cup, on side table next to Greta's bed (Greta's prints, cocoa, Greta's DNA)
  • Hair, on Greta's pink pillow (Greta's DNA)
  • Drawing, on wall above computer monitor (Greta's prints)
  • Hair, on Harry's blue pillow (Harry's DNA)
  • Jacket, on back of door (Harry's DNA)

At this stage, Greta will be found. These pieces of evidence will be provided by Greta automatically.

Put all your evidence in the folder. Link Greta's rope marks with the fibres, then Greta's clothes with the muddy footprints. Now click on the yellow sticky note to search for Harry's location. Select Tower 3, Heavy Industry, and South to locate a sugar refinery.

Refinery

Prove the children have been here

  • Blanket, under stairs in the corner of the room (Harry's DNA, Greta's hair)

  • Sugar, on the ground in front of the tipped over trolley (sugar)

Put all your evidence in the folder. Link the rope with Greta's rope marks (bedroom), the sugar with Greta's clothes (bedroom), the soda with the noodles, and finally the soda with Greta's blood (bedroom).

Prove the kidnapper was at the refinery

  • Fluid, black on the ground near the entrance (phosphoric acid)
  • Tweezers, on the large table (splinter)
  • Potato chips, on the floor next to the table
  • Pipe, along the wall to the right of the vent
  • Candy wrapper, on the floor next to the pipe

Sort out the evidence into the folder. Now link the fluid with the muddy footprints (bedroom), and the splinter with the smashed bird cage (bedroom).

Locate the kidnappers current whereabouts

  • Burger bag, on the large table (receipt)

Put the evidence in the folder, then when you leave the van you will automatically head to the next location.

Junkyard

Prove that Lionel is the kidnapper

  • Jacket, over back of dining chair (phosphoric acid)
  • Sneakers, beneath table to left of counter
  • Tape, on small table next to bed
  • Rope, at the foot of the bed
  • Note, on top of file cabinet, in front of television
  • Notepad, next to phone, on top of television

  • Door handle, on entrance door (Lionel's prints)
  • Shoes, under the bed

Sort out your evidence in the folder. Now you can link the jacket with the fabric snag (bedroom), Greta's clothes (bedroom) and the fluid (refinery). Link the sneakers with the muddy footprints (bedroom). Also link the tape with the tape (refinery), and the rope with the rope (refinery). Link both the note and notepad with Sylvia's hate mail (bedroom) and the ransom note (bedroom).

Establish that Harry was here

  • Cup, on stove (Harry's DNA, benzodiazepine)

Add the new evidence, then link the tape to the tape (refinery), and the cup with the soda (refinery).

Find out how Lionel was killed

  • Spill, on the floor in front of the champagne bottle (prussic acid)
  • Cork, on the floor in front of the champagne bottle (syringe needle, prussic acid)
  • Smashed glass, on the floor next to the champagne bottle
  • Pills, on the floor behind the champagne bottle (benzodiazepine)

Sort the evidence, then link the pills with the soda (refinery).

Deduce the size of the kidnapper's group

  • Wine glass, on the dining table (pollen, prussic acid)

Sort the evidence, then link the wine glass with the champagne. Now click on the pink sticky note to check the crime van, and you will receive some more evidence. Process the new evidence, then link the jacket with the picture (bedroom). Choose either option in the interrogation.

Bomb Shelter

Find the poison, find the killer

  • Rat poison, on the shelves near the back (prussic acid)
  • Syringe, on the shelves below the rat poison (prussic acid)
  • Boots, on the floor near the back wall (iron oxide, carbolic acid)

Sort the evidence. Link the syringe with the syringe needle (junkyard).

Search for traces of the killer

  • Shears, on the shelves nearest the door (Sylvia's DNA)
  • Blood spot, on the floor beneath the shears (Sylvia's DNA)
  • Boots, on the shelves nearest the door
  • Gloves, on the floor near the back wall
  • Wig, on chair along the back wall (hair on wig)

Sort all this new evidence. Now link the glasses with the smashed glass (junkyard) and with the wine glass (junkyard). Link the orchid with the champagne (junkyard). Link the gloves with the champagne (junkyard). Link the boots with the footprint (junkyard). Link the syringe with the gloves. Link the wig with the blonde hair (junkyard). Link the champagne with the champagne (junkyard).

Find tape fragments

Sort the evidence, then click on the pink sticky note to reconstruct the audio tape. Rearrange the audio fragments until you find the correct order, then play them.
