Master of Secrets: Dark Europe is a puzzle game where you play as Jacob, a novice of the Magistrate. You must learn to become a cryptographer, advising on plans for your organization and unveiling a plot against the King. There are 17 Steam Achievements, all documented in the walkthrough below.

Act 1

Day 1

Read the introductory letter, then open the left envelope, which contains a message from the Abbot. You will see 3 series of numbers and must complete them. The first series is increasing by 1, the second increasing by 2 and the third increasing by 111. The answer is therefore 9, 22, 555. You will get an achievement for solving your first puzzle A prima facie, and another for completing the first day Amici, diem perdidi.

Day 3

Read the letter, then you will see a mirrored message from the Abbot. Read through it and send the answer back as X, V, I, I.

Day 4

Read the letter from the Treasurer, in which the letters E and O have been replaced by diamond and square symbols respectively. Just respond with E, O. Now you need to decide between these two options (although this does not appear to have longstanding ramifications):

  • Send the Treasurer a letter with the location of lovers
  • Send a letter with information that lovers are hiding in the forest

Day 5

On this day you receive a coded letter with a grid of 10x10 numbers from the Abbot:

Follow the path start at where the 1s intersect and finishing where the 2s intersect. Unfortunately at the time of writing this gives an incorrect answer, but the following is accepted: MEET ME IN THE PIG INN 21 OCTOBER TAKE A GREAT BOOK WITH YOU!.

After you solve this you will wake up to discover a gold coin and a note, and will have to choose from the following options:

  • Burn the note and take the money (now on the "Undecided Path")
  • Save the note and take the money (now on the "Abacus Path")
  • Burn the note and hide the money under the bed (now on the "Magistrate Path")

Day 8

You will receive a letter from the Abbot, as well as a code where several letters have been exchanged for numbers based on their position in the alphabet. The decrypted message to send is AN NESCIS LONGAS REGIBUS ESSE MANUS?.

Day 10

Magistrate Path

Just copy out the message that is revealed from the coded note: GLORY TO THE MAGISTER!.

Day 11

You will see 4 series of letters/numbers and must complete them. The first 3 series represent the 3 rows of letters on a standard QWERTY keyboard layout, and the last represents the row of numbers working from outwards. The answer is therefore P, L, M, 56.

Day 12

The message today will give you three alphanumeric sums. Add up the numeric values of each of the letters to find three words to submit: CAT, DOG, BIRD. You will get an achievement for solving 10 puzzles Si vis vincere, disce pati.

Day 13

Today's message is a simple substitution cipher, where you must exchange letters for numbers. The decrypted message to send is LEARNING IS A TREASURE THAT WILL FOLLOW ITS OWNER EVERYWHERE.

Day 14

The note shows 4 magic squares. You just need to add up the numbers in any row or column to get the value of the square. The answer is therefore 15, 34.

Day 15

Abacus Path or Magistrate Path

There is a message with some missing letters. The full message is WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH?.

Undecided Path

You will receive another note and a bag of gold coins, and will be given these options:

  • Take the money and draw a cross on the wall (now on the "Abacus Path")
  • Hide the money and note under the bed (now on the "Magistrate Path")

Day 16

Abacus Path

You will awaken to find that the Abbot has been charged with treason. You will be shown a long letter encrypted with the Caesar cipher. The solution is the decrypted final two words, which are AVE TRUTH.

Magistrate Path

You will awaken to find that the Abbot has been charged with treason. You will be shown a long letter encrypted with the Caesar cipher. The solution is the first letter of every line of the decrypted text, which reads RELEASE ROSE.

With either path, you will get an achievement for solving a Caesar cipher Veni, vidi, vici.

Day 17

Abacus Path

To solve this puzzle, you need to encrypt the provided sentence, using the substitution cipher provided. The answer is SBP NOOKS NHOPQS DPSR SKK IUTB QKJPY AQKI NJ UJGJKWJ RKUQTP.

Magistrate Path

There are 3 sentences, each encrypted differently with the Caesar cipher (with shifts of 5, 10 and 1 respectively). The final word gives you the answer, which is SNAKE.

Day 19

You will be asked a series of Yes/No questions to determine whether the Abbot is guilty of treason. Answer either Yes to all questions or No to all questions.

Day 20

Based on your answers the previous day, then Abbot will either be executed Respondeat superior or saved Sententia absolutoria.

Day 21

You will find 3 envelopes and a small piece of paper at your desk. Add up the numerical values of the letters around the edge to determine the letter in the middle of each pattern. The correct answer is Y.

Day 22

Just add in the missing vowels to find the solution of DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

Day 23

Your new Abbot, Marcus, will give you a simple riddle as his first challenge, the answer to which is WRONG.

Day 24

The solution for the next puzzle is simply the first letter of each word, which makes MAGISTRATE.

Day 25

You are now given an anagram, known as the Abacus cipher, which can be decrypted to read YOU WILL DIE!.

Day 26

On this day you receive another grid of 10x10 numbers from the new Abbot:

Day 28

This time you will be shown an 8x8 number grid which turns out to be a magic square. Add up the numbers in any row or column to get its value of 260.

Day 29

A final riddle encourages you to discover a single word which appears to related to repeated sixes: BEAST.

Act 2

Day 1

The letter you receive contains Morse code that can be decoded to read ACTUM UT SUPRA Comple promissum.

Day 2

You must encrypt the provided text using a substitution cipher. The hint mentions the Atbash cipher, which means substituting A for Z, B for Y and so on. The solution is therefore LM Z UFOO NLLM MRTSG ZG GSV LOW HGLMVNZHLM'H KOZXV, MLG UZI UILN GSV XSFIXS.

Day 4

This puzzle involves using a provided encryption disk to encrypt the phrase "Power and magic". The answer is LKSAN WJZ IWCEY.

Day 6

The chessboard you are given has letters spaced out so that they can be traversed by a knight, giving the message CITY UNDER SIEGE.

Day 7

The series of numbers can be interpreted as letters in the following way:

This gives the password of HOOD.

Day 9

You come across a strange document that you need to decrypt. It is a list of numbers that can be converted to letters by their numerical position in the alphabet, giving the message ITS ALL A LIE. You will get an achievement for solving 10 number puzzles Radices litterarum amarae sunt, fructus dulces.

Day 13

You will find another 10x10 grid of letters and numbers, and instructions to find three words related to your destiny:

Find the first answer hidden in the top-right corner: DEATH.

Day 14

The next day brings an anagram, which can be rearranged to give LONELINESS.

Day 15

The first letter of each row in the next puzzle reveals the word FATE.

Day 16

This next puzzle provides a Haiku, which in English translates to "In the autumn nights, Rolls across the sky, Cold moon". It requires solving the same anagram as on Day 14, but in Russian, resulting in the answer ОДИНОЧЕСТВО Artis occultae.

Day 17

You will now be shown a 9x9 number grid which is another square. Add up the numbers in any row or column to get its value of 369.

Day 18

Read the mirrored message, and as instructed answer with L, Q, X.

Day 21

The next letter you receive contains Morse code that can be decoded to read SECUNDO GROUP.

Day 22

You now receive a partial note that apparently has some writing missing. To make a valid equation, input the following: 98-76+54+3+21=100.

Day 23

There is now a riddle involving days and months. For a month to have 3 even Sundays, the first Sunday must be on the second of the month. Therefore the seventh day will be FRIDAY.

Day 24

You will see a 6x5 grid of Russian/Cyrillic characters and must identify a word hidden within:

Н
Е
Б
Е
Т
У

Running in a spiral pattern you will see СПИРАЛЬ, which translates into the word SPIRAL.

Day 25

Next comes a relatively simple mathematics problem, with an answer of 15 Latentem in umbra.

Day 26

A slightly more complex mathematics/logic puzzle follows, with an answer of 7 Loco columbae.

Day 27

For the following number puzzle, the middle column is always the sum of the outer columns, so the missing number is 13.

Day 28

Decrypting the Caesar cipher in this puzzle yields "The diversion will take place in the north of the city! Everybody get ready!" This gives you the answer as NORTH.

Day 29

Decrypting the numeric cipher in this puzzle yields "We are launching a major assault on the headquarters tomorrow at eight. Gather troops. We will attack from the south." This gives you the answer as 8 Quieti tempus.

Act 3

Day 2

Solve a puzzle where you perform basic mathematical operations on the numerical values of alphabetic characters to come up with the message MILTENSTEIN UNDER THREAT.

Day 3

Read the letter, in which the letters A, E and O have been replaced by star, cross and square symbols respectively. Just respond with A, E, O.

Day 4

Abacus Path

Send back the message as instructed: YOU WILL HAVE REINFORCEMENTS SOON.

Magistrate Path

Now you need to decide between these two options:

  • Send a peace offering to the King of the Dano-Norwegian Realm
  • Send a letter with words of support to Miltenstein army soldiers

Day 6

Abacus Path

You will have to decide what to do with a large sum of money:

  • Keep the money (you should now jump directly to Day 29)
  • Use the money to bribe (you should now jump directly to Day 8)

Magistrate Path

The correct solution to the riddle as written should be "short", but the currently accepted answer is SHORTER.

Day 7

Magistrate Path

Another riddle is given to you by one of your students, the answer to which is SILENCE.

Day 8

The next simple riddle has a solution of MAP.

Day 9

You must decrypt the provided text using the Atbash cipher, as used back in Act 2, Day 2. This advises you to send the provided numbers back in descending order. Given that the message is also reversed, send the numbers back instead in ascending order: 245789.

Day 10

Magistrate Path

You receive a chessboard with letters spaced out so that they can be traversed by a knight, giving the message AT THE OLD MILL.
