Moonmist is a classic text adventure game by Infocom. You play as a detective helping out a friend who has been seeing a mystery ghost in Tresyllian Castle. You travel to the castle to begin your investigations. The game begins with you selecting one of 4 different scenarios, based on your favorite color.

Introduction

Examine the gate and press the dragon. Enter your full name, then answer "yes". Now enter your favourite color and answer "yes" again. If you pick yellow, green, red or blue, then the spare bedroom will be decorated in that color. If you pick any other color, it will be decorated in the color you chose plus one of those four.

First Clues

Enter the courtyard, then answer "yes" and follow Tamara. Greet Jack, then follow Tamara twice more and you will reach the new great hall. Answer either "yes" or "no" to the question, then answer "no" to the question from Wendish. Follow Tamara twice more. Ask Tamara about the ghost, then wait and answer "yes". Now ask Bolitho about the ghost. Answer "yes", then wait once and answer "yes" 3 more times. Examine the device, then drop it before going north. Undress and take a bath, then go south and dress for dinner. Look in the drawer, then go west and down.

Head west and north into the dining room. Wait here until Bolitho leaves a note on Jack's napkin, then take the note and read it, before dropping it again. Now get your dinner and time will pass. Wait, and you will here Lionel's voice. Look under the bust to discover a tape recorder, then wait 3 more times to here more of the recording. Look under the punchbowl. Examine the first clue, then get the second clue, and examine it too.

Solving the Mystery

Follow the section below corresponding to the color from earlier.

Yellow

Walk south and west twice to reach the old great hall. Go up 3 times to reach the fighting deck, and look in the bell, then get the third clue. Examine it. Now head down 4 times and go east into the kitchen. Get the lantern. Go west twice into a dungeon, and turn on the lantern. Examine the iron maiden, then enter it. Examine the coffin, then take the fourth clue and examine it. Now drop all the clues. Enter the maiden again to return to the dungeon. Walk east and look, then move the bricks and enter the hole. Examine the skeleton twice, then take the necklace. Examine it and go back out through the hole.

Next go up, east twice, up and east again to return to your bedroom. Examine the wall mirror, then flip the switch. Head east and north, then get all. Examine the blowgun and look inside it, then examine the costume. Return south and west, and go to the drawing room, by heading west, down and east. Search the floor and answer "yes" to keep searching, then get the jewel.

Use the secret passages upstairs to reach Tamara's room (go west, up and east into your room, then east, south and west twice). If Tamara enters while you are here, apologise. Look in the jewelry case, then get the earring. Insert the jewel in the earring. Now look under the bed and examine the journal you find. Look under the bed again and examine the receipt. Arrest Tamara (find her if she's not here).

Green

Go south, west twice, up twice and north to reach the game room. Turn on the light, then examine the rhino head. Get the eye, then drop it and get the third clue. Examine it. Next head south, down twice, east, down and east, then take the lantern. Return to your bedroom by heading up, east, south, east, up and east. Examine the wall mirror, then flip the switch. Turn on the lantern, then walk east, north twice, west and south. Get the fourth clue and examine it, then return north, east twice, south and west.

Walk west, down, west 3 times, up and east into the office. Get the inkwell and examine it, then drop all the clues. Get the journal and read it, then drop it again. Next head to the sitting room, by going west, down, east twice and south. Search the desk, then take the maid's note, read it, and drop it again. Head north and east into the new great hall. Search the floor and answer "yes" to keep searching, then get the contact lens.

Now go to Wendish's room by walking up, northeast and west. If Wendish enters while you are here, apologise, then wait for him to leave. Search the room and answer "yes" to keep searching, then get the box and open it. Look in the kit, then examine the wig. Go east, south, down, west 3 times, up and northeast. Search the room and answer "yes" to keep searching, then get the notebook and read it. Find Wendish (easiest way is to return to his room by going southwest, down, east 3 times, up, northeast and west, then search several times until he arrives). Pull the mustache, then arrest Wendish.

Red

Head south, west twice, up twice and south again into the chapel. Turn on the light. Search the window, then get the third clue and read it. Next go north, down twice and north to the courtyard. Head east twice into the maze, then dig the ground, and answer "yes" to keep digging. Get the fourth clue, then examine it and drop all the clues.

Return to the foyer by heading west twice and south. Examine the stand, then get the cane and examine it. Remove the paint to discover the treasure. Go to the sitting room by walking south, west and south again, then give the club to Tamara. Get the maid's note, then examine it and drop it again.

Now head to the kitchen by going north twice, west and down. Get the lantern. Return to your bedroom by heading up, east, south, east, up and east. Examine the wall mirror, then flip the switch. Turn on the lantern, then walk east and north. Wait for 200 minutes - the ghost should appear at around 12:40. Talk to the ghost, then head south and west.

Go to the drawing room by walking west, down and east. Search the floor and answer "yes" to keep searching, then get the jewel. Return west, up and east to your bedroom, then continue east, south, west, down, west and northeast to enter the master bedroom via the secret passages. Search the room and answer "yes" to keep searching. Get the necklace, then insert the jewel in the necklace. Open the door and peer through the keyhole. Go east and examine the crest, then remove it. Play the tape and go west, then arrest Jack.

Blue

Go west and down to the kitchen. Grab the lantern, then go west and examine the rack. Take the wine and examine the bottle - note the word "our". Now head up, east and south to the sitting room. Examine the desk, then take the maid's note, read it, and drop it again. Examine the piano, then take the piece of music and read it - note the word "suit". Next go north and east twice to the drawing room. Examine the tapestry - note the word "arm". Go west and examine the suit, then look in it and take the third clue. Read the clue, and if you insert the words you have found to get the phrase "My alarm has no glamour; Its 'suite' tones to clamour. Can you find me?".

Head west 3 times and up 3 times. Examine the bell, then drop all the clues and get the skull. Return down 3 times, then east twice and south. Give the skull to Tamara. Go north and east, then search the floor and answer "yes" to keep searching. Get the lens and examine it. Walk north, east, up and west to Vivien's room. If Vivien enters while you are here, apologise. Open the box and get the small box, then search the wooden box and take the diary.

Walk east twice to return to your room. Read the diary, then open the box and put the first lens inside. Examine the wall mirror, then flip the switch. Turn on the lantern, then get the device and walk east and north. Wait for 200 minutes - the ghost will appear. Press the button, then examine the ghost. Remove the wig and arrest Vivien.
