1954 Alcatraz is a point and click adventure game starring Joe Lyons, an inmate in Alcatraz. With the help of his wife Christine, he will attempt to escape the infamous prison, forging friendships and making enemies along the way. There are 25 Steam Achievements, all documented in the walkthrough below.

Part 1

Joe

Search the grate beneath your sink to find your glass shiv. Search the books on the left end of your shelf to find your pain pills. Use your glass shiv on your bunk to get your money, then combine the broken shiv handle and glass shard to fix the glass shiv again. Leave your cell One of those Days. Talk to Hank, then when the bell rings you will automatically go to the mess hall.

Use your glass shiv to kill Bumpy (1/8), kill Gas Pipe (2/8) and kill Hank (3/8) (each time your game will continue from just before this). Now talk to each of them. Eat your breakfast and you will take the pancake. Exit to the left to go to the visitor's room.

Talk to Christine about everything, then talk to Gas Pipe and he will create a distraction. Talk to Christine and choose to lie about the loot.

Christine

Pier to Alcatraz

After your conversation with Mickey, use one of the telescopes. Leave to the left and you will go to your apartment building.

My Messy Apartment

Examine the lock on your apartment door, then head inside to find it has been trashed. Click on any of the mess to tidy the apartment Squeaky Clean. Look at the note that you automatically take from the globe. You will already have a bobby pin (1/6) in your inventory; search the open drawer to find another bobby pin (2/6). Take the sheet music from the piano, the Valo from the ceiling lamp, a matchbook from the clothes on the rack, and a jazz record from next to the turntable.

Talk to the cat on the drawers, then go outside and come back in again. The cat will move around from the drawers, to the piano, table or turntable. When the cat is on the turntable, turn it on Cat Spin. Now climb out the window to the fire escape and talk to Dale - make sure you invite him inside. After he leaves, go out to the fire escape again. Pick up the Lucky Lager, then search the window box to find a metal plate - look at this in your inventory to see it is for forging money. Now go back inside and leave your apartment.

My Landlady's Apartment

Head up the stairs on the right. Search the bottom of the bed to find a bobby pin (3/6) then talk to Vivian, who wants you to bring her some soup. Go back downstairs and examine the menu on the middle table, then enter the kitchen on the left. Use your symbol for winter melon on the herbs and spice drawers along the back wall to get some winter melon. Pick up the ladle on the right and use it on the wok on the stove to get some soup, then add your winter melon. Now go back upstairs and give the soup to Vivian. Talk to her about everything, then leave again.

Opera

Use one of your bobby pins on the lock here. Now head through to the opera dressing room. Try to take the radio (next to the middle head-dress) but you will be spotted. Find another bobby pin (4/6) in the big trunk, then talk to Xiaowen - he will only give you the radio if you prove you are Beat.

Caffe Napoli

When you arrive here, you find that the cafe is closed by order of the Police Department.

Detective Grassi's Office

Talk to the detective about the cafe, and agree to go on a date with him. Talk to him, then leave as soon as you have the chance Friends Instead. Go back to the detective's office and look at the papers on the right. Talk to the detective and ask about your old arrest report - you will automatically steal the photo from the papers while he is distracted.

Caffe Napoli

Take the Evan Camfield manuscript from the table.

Opera

Give your manuscript to Xiaowen, then give him your sheet music. Now you can take the radio.

My Landlady's Apartment

Go upstairs and give the radio to Vivian - you will get a V key and learn a new address. Search the upper drawer on the right to get another metal plate, then combine the two plates in your inventory. Examine the gloves on the left. Show the counterfeit plates to Vivian, and she will agree to print anything you need.

1310 Grant

You will talk to Dale, and he will end up coming with you. Knock on the seriously locked door, and someone will shoot at you through the door.

My Messy Apartment

Go out through the window, then climb up to the roof. Go over to the opposite roof by walking over the planks, and you will head inside. Talk to him about everything A Living Legend. Talk to him again about everything. Take a whole lot of paper from the pile on the floor to end up with a manuscript. Take the book from the left end of the lower shelf, then examine it in your inventory to end up with a stamp. Try to open the fridge, but the author requires a pass phrase, and you don't know it yet - make sure you say "I have no idea" or you will miss an achievement later.

Switch back to Joe.

Part 2

Joe

In the yard, choose to ice Gas Pipe and you will end up in solitary. Examine the metal plate. Talk to the lower-left grate, then talk to the upper-center grate. You will end up with the Lizard's escape plan in your inventory. Walk down to talk to the guard - he will not let you out without permission from the warden.

Switch to Christine again.

Christine

Mickey's Club

Talk to the bouncer, who doesn't want to let you in. Show him your matchbook, then head inside. Enter the dressing room on the left. Talk to Goldie about everything. Search the old trunk on the floor to find another bobby pin (5/6). Take a rose from the flowers on the left. Go back out to the main part of the club. Talk to Mason, and you will receive a blank solitary form (this will need signing). Talk to Bee, who wants to meet you in the powder room. Talk to her about everything, and she will give you the combination for Mickey's safe. Talk to the drunk girl on the floor. Now go back out and leave the club.

My Landlady's Apartment

Go upstairs and give the solitary form to Vivian, then give her the letter from the warden - you will end up with a signed solitary form.

Mickey's Club

Give the signed solitary form to Mason. You will automatically switch to Joe.

Part 3

Joe

Yard

Talk to Bumpy, then give him your pancake and talk to him again to get Bumpy's escape plan. Talk to Hank; when he prompts you for payment, give him the cigarettes with cash first, then the pain pills. Talk to him about everything and you will end up with your escape plan. Frank will then call you over and give you a book card. Now go over to leave the yard. When you reach the metal detector, talk to the new CO on the left Unpaid work.

Laundry

Mason will ask you to fix the washer, and will give you a wrench. Talk to Chiquita, then give her your wedding room and agree to her proposition Blown Away. Pick up the hanger and shoelace from the left, then search the laundry box to get some rope and another hanger. Now examine Chiquita's washer to see it is clogged. Combine your two hangers and use them on Chiquita's washer. Give the sexy lingerie to her. Now leave this area.

Industries

Examine the tool table on the left to get an oil can, then take the magazine from under the bench. Talk to Frank and Bumpy. Look at Bumpy's machine, then use your wrench on it, followed by your shoelace. Combine the shoelace and oil can, then use the oily shoelace on Bumpy's machine to fix it.

Power House

Take the projector bulb from near the window, then search the toolbox to get an electrical cable, a wooden brush, a fan belt and a wheel center. Look at the control panel on the back wall, then use your electrical cable to repair it. Now head right to the DC generator. Examine the generator and you will open it and remove 2 loose gears. Try to use one of these on the generator to realize they are both the wrong size.

Chapel

Talk to Hank and the Chaplain. Examine the projector and replace its bulb. Examine the speaker and you will end up with a wheel rim; combine this with your wheel center to get a complete wheel. Search the drawer of the altar to find a Tijuana Bible. Look at this in your inventory to see it belongs to Hank - give it to him in exchange for some rope. Pick up the seagull egg from the nest in the window on the far left.

Industries

Use your wooden brush on Bumpy's machine.

Power House

Go right to the DC generator. Use your wooden gear on the open panel, then use your wheel and fan belt on it - you will then automatically close the panel. Back out and use the control panel to start up the generator. Mason will now take you to his apartment.

Mason's Apartment

Examine the portable record player and you will automatically fix it and grab the magazine. Next examine the TV. Talk to Mason, who will give you the TV manual, then use this on the TV to realize a vacuum tube is faulty. Talk to Mason again, who will give you 2 vacuum tubes and a piece of wire. Try using each of the vacuum tubes on the TV manual to find out which one is correct, then use this on the TV. After Mason's wife gives you some tin foil, use this on the TV as well.

Outside, examine the phone to get a dime and a phone resistor, then open the power box to the left. Use your piece of wire in the power box. Try the phone again, then use your remaining tin foil on it.

Christine

Caffe Napoli

Talk to Sutter, then give him your Valo. Talk to him again to get a love poem and learn a new location.

Washington Square Park

Talk to the bushes Bush Supporter. Try talking to Matty, but he is scared of the cop. Talk to Detective Grassi and get him to leave. Give your can of Lucky Lager to the homeless man lying down, then talk to him Queen of the Road. Now talk to Matty about everything and give him the love poem from Sutter. Talk to him again, then give him the rose.

Caffe Napoli

After automatically returning here, talk to Sutter who tells you about a diary he sold to a nearby bookstore.

The Lower Depths Bookstore

Talk to the lady here and give her your manuscript. Talk to her again to get the diary, and you will automatically find a V key inside.

Caffe Napoli

You will automatically come back here again. Search Bernadette's purse on the floor to find the final bobby pin (6/6) Pin Me Down. Talk to Bernadette and you will go to her studio.

Bernadette's Studio

Talk to Bernadette about everything. Pick up the flier, and she will realize that the key is at the gallery.

Art Gallery

Talk to the gallery owner, and you will end up finding the B key. Go outside and give Mickey any one of your three keys.

Peter and Paul Church

Use a bobby pin to unlock the gate, then go inside. Talk to the chaplain; you need to do this twice to specifically ask him for information from Joe - he won't agree to help you.

Mickey's Club

Talk to Bee again and you will mention Bernadette. Now go out to the main floor and talk to Mickey - you will end up in his office. Talk to Mickey about everything. Now look at the surgical mask, clothesline, pills and medical book. Talk to Mickey and pretend to be sick, then he will leave the office. Now use your combination on the old safe, but it won't work. Search the papers on the desk to get a ledger, then leave the office.

Go to the dressing room on the left and talk to Goldie, then use the combination on her to get a new combination. Talk to Mickey to return to his office, then pretend to be sick again. Use your second combination on the old safe and you will retrieve a 35mm negative, Goldie's contract, a gun, a secret ledger and your missing key. Combine your two ledgers, then use the red phone on the desk. Use the ledgers on the red phone to dob Mickey in to the mob. Leave the office once more.

Talk to Bee to warn her about the mob. Enter the dressing room to warn Goldie about the mob Sisterhood. You will automatically see the mob kill Mickey (4/8) Dial M for Murder. Go back and talk to Bee again, and give her the 35mm negative, then she will give you a blackmail photo.

Peter and Paul Church

Show your blackmail photo the chaplain, then talk to him in the confessional and again in the main part of the church.

Part 4

Joe

Chapel

Talk to the chaplain and you will automatically give him a note for Christine. Also give him your book card.

Laundry

Give Chiquita both of your magazines and you will receive a knife-proof vest.

Power House

Go to the right to fight gas pipe - just hit him in areas he is not protecting.

Hospital

When talking to the doctor, admit you have killed people, then continue the conversation. Fix the radiator and the telephone Four Star Prison. Fix the anesthesia tanks, then use them on the doctor Sandman. You will end up in an isolation ward.

Christine

Peter and Paul Church

Talk to the chaplain, then look at both items he gave you.

The Lower Depths Bookstore

Give Volume IX to the lady, then show her your book card from Joe. Look to the right and pick up Stroud's bird book from the far right.

Peter and Paul Church

Give Stroud's bird book to the Chaplain to get to Joe.

My Landlady's Apartment

Go upstairs and give Vivian your jazz record. Talk to her and ask for fake passports - she needs photos and ink.

Caffe Napoli

Talk to Bernadette about everything and she will give you some ink.

My Landlady's Apartment

Go upstairs and give the ink and photos to Vivian, but now she needs some blank passports. Search the lower drawer on the right to get them, then give them to her and you will receive fake passports.

1310 Grant

Try to open the fridge and give the correct phrase: "Pack for Mexico"; you get an achievement if you never tried an incorrect phrase Hole in One. Now use any one of your keys on the safe to open it and find the loot Got it!.

Part 5

Joe

Hospital

Press the panic button on the wall and ask to see the Chaplain.

Chapel

Talk to the Chaplain and you will receive the bird book from him. Talk to Mason to leave.

Hospital

Examine the window to get a bent nail. Use this on your lock and escape to the corridor. Go through the first door on the right into Birdman's room. Give him your seagull egg Sweet Bird of Youth and then Stroud's bird book. Use your bent nail on the lock here to get into the cell. Steal the sheets, then examine the window to see that you need a tool to open the gap further.

Return to the corridor, then enter the operating room on the left. Use the rolling chair on the car jack to get it. Combine the car jack and handle in your inventory. Search the trash and you will get a bloody shirt.

Go out to the corridor once more, and now enter the small hospital room on the right - it is a supply room. Pick up the towels, then cleaning supplies (muriatic acid) and the phone part (Tk421) from the fuse box on the right. Open the first aid box and take the cleaning fluid from inside. Combine your two bottles of fluid to make a smoke screen. Combine all four lengths of rope to end up with 32 feet of rope. Combine your phone resistor and Tk421 to get a phone feedback device.

Head out to the corridor and enter Birdman's room again. Use your car jack on the window and you will remember about Lizard's plan. Go out to the corridor and search the trash on the left to get a trash bag. Enter the isolation ward on the left. Combine your trash bag and bloody shirt, then use this on your bed. Enter Birdman's room and use your car jack on the window to get outside.

Escape

Now you can distract the tower guard in two different ways:

  1. Throw your smoke screen at the guard.
  2. Use your phone feedback device on the phone line.

Now climb down to the right to the dungeons. Kick open the rusty door and go inside. Pick up the wooden beam and use it on the pipes. Now turn the red valve to clear the path, then go along the tunnel. When you have Gas Pipe pinned to the ground, use the rock to kill Gas Pipe (5/8). After automatically picking up his pipe, climb back up the rope.

Back in the tunnel, use the pipe on the loose brickwork on the right. Go through to find an old air-raid shelter. Pick up the duck tape on the left, then use it on the broken ladder piece on the ground. Add your pipe to the ladder to stabilize it, then climb up. Kill Mason (6/8) by pushing him over the ledge Payback Time. Go towards the building in the background. Open the control box to the left of the phone and use your dime on it, then use the phone to call Christine.

Christine

My Messy Apartment

Answer the phone when it rings. Look inside the Mermaid's purse to see a boat key. Give Goldie's contract to her, then take the boat key. Talk to Bernadette and she will agree to look after your cat Cat-astrophe averted. Leave your apartment.

Joe

Escape

You will automatically get an achievement after hanging up the phone I Just Called To Say.... Return left to the path, then down to the old shelter, and you will automatically go to the cave. Save your game if you want to be able to get all of the achievements, then enter the water.

Christine

Pier to Alcatraz

You should be greeted at the pier by Grassi and the thug. Appeal to Grassi's honor twice, then keep talking to Grassi until he decides to shoot the thug. Now select to shoot Grassi (7/8). Use the sailboat to get out to Joe. Talk to him about everything, then select to leave without him, then shoot Joe (8/8) Sleeping with the Fishes. If you managed to kill all 8 people you will get an extra achievement In Cold Blood.

Load your game. This time on the pier, appeal to Grassi's honor twice, then kick the trash can Two for One. Use the sailboat to get out to Joe. Talk to him about everything, then select to leave without him, then let him go Severed Ties.
